Critical Mineral Resources?

In a recent news, the Philippines got the top list of most names collected for NASA’s future Mars mission. A lot of Filipinos are willing to leave the Earth and explore in Mars. Most of them are fed up with the different issues here in the Philippines that’s why they wanted to find a new place to stay in and for some the Earth isn’t the home they used to know. Why? and who’s to blame?

According to Steven Benner, a Biochemist of the Westheimer Institute for Science and Technology in Florida said. “If our hypothetical Martian ancestors had remained on Mars, there might not have been a story to tell. It’s lucky that we ended up here, nevertheless, as certainly  Earth has been the better of the two planets for sustaining life.”

Earth is the only planet in the universe known to possess life. The planet boasts several million species of life, living in habitats ranging from the bottoms of the deepest ocean to a few miles into the atmosphere. And scientists think for more species remain to be discovered.

What is the earth made of?

The outermost layer of the Earth is known as the crust, and this layer is responsible for the majority of life on Earth. The Earth’s crust has four main components and these are minerals, rocks, soil and water.

Earth is the only planet in our solar system that has a large amount of liquid water. Because of its water, Earth is home to millions of species of plants and animals.

Rocks and minerals are all around us! They help us to develop new technologies and are used in our everyday lives. Our use of rocks and minerals includes as building materials, cosmetics, cars, rocks and appliances. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle and strengthen the body, humans need to consume minerals daily. Rocks and minerals are important for learning about earth materials, structure and systems. Learning about rocks and minerals gives students a deeper appreciation of the story behind the scenery in our national parks.

Figure 3. Rehabilitation of Manila Bay (ABS-CBN News, INQUIRER.net)

Have you heard about the beautification of Manila Bay? It’s all over the news! According to Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu and other DENR officials said it was part of the government’s long-term efforts in the rehabilitation of Manila Bay. DENR added “crushed dolomite boulders” would be utilized for the aforesaid project and not “white sand”. But health experts said that grinded dolomite rock compose of crystalline silica a toxic dust that causes hazard into health. Using dolomite has advantage and disadvantage. Dolomite is magnesium used mainly for industrial and agricultural applications.

Figure 4. Cebu Gov Stops Dolomite Extraction (Philippine Star)

Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia on Tuesday issued Executive Order (EO) 25 ordering the Philippine Mining Service Corp. (PMSC) and Dolomite Mining Corp. (DMC) to “immediately stop” further extraction, processing, sale and transport of dolomite. But despite of the Executive orders that has been issued and criticisms the DENR still proceed for the project.

Mining that dolomite is surely a destruction of the environment in Alcoy, Cebu. Ancil Adams once said ,“Once destroyed natures beauty cannot be repurchased at any price.” Honestly the intention is good but spending millions for the rehabilitation of Manila Bay at the expense of destroying the natural resources that God creates doesn’t make sense and definitely not needed. Mining Companies and the Government should be responsible for their actions and face all the consequences in the future. Let us all wait and see until the project is done.

Earth provides everything we need in our everyday lives through its natural resources. But how long will it provides the limitless needs of humans? Let us all be aware that the rate of consumption of energy and minerals has been increasing because of increasing demand of over populated countries. Increase in population growth would lead to serious global challenges and reveal the insufficiency of resources all over the world. The leaders of each Nation must take immediate action regarding this matter in order to protect our mineral deposit and be able to manage the flow of our resources. We our God’s steward of Earth. Each of us has an obligation to restore and conserve our natural resources for us to achieve a better quality of life both for the present and future generations. Be part of it and let us all involve ourselves to make our HOME EARTH the place to stay in and the one we used to know.
